What Makes A Perfume Sexy?
If you don't get the title, then you probably have no idea what ambergris is. Let me make it simple for you. It's whale vomit. No, I'm not kidding, joking, or messing around. It isn't April Fools or anything like that either. It might just look like a bunch of rocks from that photo above, but it's anything but that. Whale vomit is actually used in perfume, and you can even find it in a few of our elixirs at Maison 21G. Don’t worry, though! It smells phenomenal as you’ll soon read and find out.
Sperm whales are an endangered species and possession of ambergris these days can actually be illegal in some countries, such as the USA and Australia! We love whales here at Maison 21G, and they deserve to live their lives just like all of us. At Maison 21G we source all our ambergris without harming any whales as it's a complete byproduct that usually washes up on beaches for a lucky person to find!
Ambergris is also known as Grey Amber, and it happens to be one of the most valuable raw materials in perfumery! It can cost thousands of dollars for just one lump of it! Where does it come from? You already know it’s vomit from a whale, so is obviously comes from whales, but more specifically the sperm whale. When a sperm whale eats squid it irritates their intestine because they’re unable to digest properly. The poor whales then vomit that out, but we don't mind one bit when it washes up on some random beach!

Hello, ambergris! Nope... Wrong whale. Even if it were a sperm whale, you just can't see one and hope there's some ambergris lying about. Ambergris comes in all shapes and sizes and often looks just like a rock, which can be huge chunks or just tiny fragments. Given its price, we understand the craze to find some: In 2016, a British couple taking a walk on a beach discovered a hunk of ambergris (weighing in at 1.57 kgs) that was valued at $70,000! Cha-ching!
Ambergris is one of the most iconic notes in perfumery. It is considered to be an excellent fixative and was used in most perfume's made by Guerlain that were associated with civet. Its smell is super strong, very animalic, with sexual tones mixed in with woody, marine undertones. You either love it, or you hate it. The scent is somewhere between hypnotic and terrible! We just hope you don't find it ambergross, because it can be a real treasure!
Today, this expensive material is typically replaced by synthetic materials, but it is still found in the extracts of a few major branded perfumes. But most don’t want to use animal products for their corporate image, even though we aren’t taking anything directly from the whales themselves!
Personally, we're in love with ambergris. If it's super sexy and addictive that you want, then that's what you get. You will find this beautiful note in our Immortal Incense elixir. When you wear it, you will feel the powerful presence of the ancient oak tree standing resolutely in its forest – distinctive, wise, and noble – mixed with this intense animal-like ambergris note. You can wear it for a special occasion or an evening date to hypnotise that special someone.
An invitation to get closer to you...Ambergris is also present in our Tobacco Trance elixir, a modern extravagance! It is a deluxe bold composition, outrageously flirtatious with its different wood, grey amber and spicey mix. A perfect complement for that dress to impress event. It will definitely give confidence to the wearer, making them stand out from the crowd. It brings such a personal element with it, you just can't help being uber charismatic!
We've launched our official Maison 21G website! You're just a click away from being in control of your essence in every sense of the term. Prepare yourself! This, and more, all from Maison 21G!
